Alan Kelly founded Verbatim Instant Transcripts in 1994 with a name suggesting one action and one objective. Shortly thereafter, VerbtatimIT.com was registered on the internet. Ask VerbatimIT principal Alan Kelly what he does for work, and “I hear voices” might be the reply. Not to worry. It's his job to render perfect transcripts from recorded media in the course of a day.
Hearing and listening are both crucial in producing a VerbatimIT transcript rather than a "trashscript". Hearing is detecting something unexpected; listening is attending to what is detected. A transcriptionist must "get it" right with utter confidence. VerbatimIT does just that.
After serving in the US Navy as a "ditty-chaser" (Morse Code typist), and some years in between, he formed VerbatimIT with the motto "You said it. We VerbatimIT. You read it... today, or sooner."
Even as he registered Verbatim Instant Transcripts with the Secretary of State in Vermont in 1995, he was already proficient and practiced in both Gregg Shorthand and Morse Code as those skills related to language.
These skills, practices and theories formed the basis for developing and using an English language database whose practical use was to produce perfect English language transcription with ease and comfort for the keyboardist/typist.
